CNN Money posted today an article on the benefits of slowing down on the road. I like being efficient so a strategic 9 miles over the speed limit is a good thing in my book. Needless to say, I wasn’t too excited to read how slow I’d have to go to save a few $$$, but after reading the article it’s really not that bad.
“In a typical family sedan, every 10 miles per hour you drive over 60 is like the price of gasoline going up about 54 cents a gallon.”
Seems worth it to me! But let’s calculate it first…..
A trip from Austin to Houston is about 160 miles. If I manage to go 75 miles per hour the entire time it would take me 2:06 total. If I slowed it down to 60 miles per hour the entire time it would take me 2:36.
Now let’s look at the 160 miles in my car which gives me approx 35 mpg totaling to 4.5 gallons to get there. 4.5 gallons x a savings of 81 cents a gallon = $3.65 in savings total.
Taking 30 minutes longer to get to Houston could save me $3.65. Is that worth it? Maybe if you add on the fact that I am burning less gas into the world. Thoughts?

you can stop and buy a Starbucks with the money you saved.
